Even if I’d felt like I could ask for help, I had too much pride and fear to do so. I wasn’t ready to give up control, and I thought most leaders didn’t have to. Was I simply not disciplined enough to be a self-starter?

Brianna (aka Bri) is a graduate of the University at Albany, SUNY, where she studied communication and English. In 2019, she moved from New York to Corvallis, Oregon.

Carl supervises Brianna’s workstation and ensures that it’s covered in gray and white fur. He was adopted in 2022 from Heartland Humane Society in Corvallis, Oregon.

Before I work with anyone, I make sure our values are in alignment. There are many causes I can get behind, and if I don’t know about an issue, I’m eager to learn about it from your perspective. That being said, I have my limits. If your mission is driven by homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, ableism, white supremacy, or Christian supremacy, I won’t work with you. If you’re concerned that your mission unintentionally crosses these boundaries, we can talk about it. It becomes a problem when you ignore it or you’re proud of it.
